Recommendsday: October Kindle Offers

It’s the second Wednesday of the month, so it’s Kindle offer day, but it’s also an Amazon promo event at the moment, so apologies in advance if there are a few deals in here that don’t last long.

But I’m starting this list the way I started the month – by buying Sarah MacLean’s latest book, Knockout, which is 99p on kindle. These don’t go on offer often, so grab it while you can. There are a few other historical romances on offer too – Just Like Heaven and The Lost Duke of Wyndham by Julia Quinn as well as Regency Buck by Georgette Heyer. In contemporary romances, there is former BotW The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood and an older Katie Fforde – Wild Designs – and Trisha Ashley – Wish Upon a Star – that are 99p

Lets move on to mysteries of various types and there is Death comes to Marlow by Robert Thoroughgood, for 99p, which is the same price as latest HM The Queen mystery Murder Most Royal. In classic crime, The Tiger in the Smoke by Margery Allingham is on offer if you want a hit of Albert Campion. The very dodgy looking Peter Wimsey editions continue, but the 99p good edition is one of my favourites – Strong Poison.

Moving on to stuff in other categories, About Time in Jodi Taylor’s Time Police series is on offer for 99p, as is The Rosie Project by Graham Simsion and The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatio Sanchez by Patterson Joseph. There’s a couple of non fiction books worth a look – including Lucy Worsley’s Agatha Christie biography and Hello World by Hannah Fry

And finally it’s about to turn 20, so maybe that’s why The Wee Free Men is 99p – it’s the first of Terry Pratchett‘s four Tiffany Aching books, which are childrens books in the Discworld and I love them, even if I’ve never been able to reread the last one, which was also Terry Pratchett’s final book. As a bonus Carpe Jugulum from the adult bit is £1.99.

Recommendsday: August Kindle Offers

It’s the second Wednesday of the month again – so you know what that means! Yes, hide your wallets, I’m about to tempt you into some serious buying action with the current crop of Kindle offers. After all, given that I end up buying stuff when I write it, it’s only fair that you buy some too…

First up – one of last month’s BotWs and also very new release Business or Pleasure is 99p as is You with a View (which was in last month’s Quick Reviews) and Annabel Monaghan’s latest book Same Time Next Summer (as mentioned in the Summer Romances post). Another recent BotW Christina Lauren’s The True Love Experiment is 99p as is Elissa Sussman‘s Funny You Should Ask

If you’re after Murder mysteries rather than romance, then The Twist of a Knife by Anthony Horowitz from his Hawthorne series 99p and Rev Richard Coles’s Murder before Evensong still 99p. The Murder Game – Tom Hindle’s second book after Fatal Crossing – is 99p as well and I really must get around to reading it!

Another one I need to get around to reading (but not crime as far as I know) is Small Miracles, which is 99p, I presume because it has arrived in paperback but there is also a sequel is arriving in the autumn, because I saw a proof copy in the office last week. I have Meryl Wilsner’s debut Something to Talk about somewhere in the backlog – Mistakes Were Made ahead of her next one, which is out in September. Also in romances on offer presumably ahead of the next release is Delilah Green Doesn’t Care, which I read recently along with the next in the series, Astrid Parker Doesn’t Fail.

In authors I have recently enjoyed, The Storied Life of A J Fikry – from Gabrielle Zevens who wrote Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow – is 99p. I’m still waiting for news on what Brit Bennett is going to write next, but I’ve seen Vanishing Half around a fair bit recently and that’s also 99p.

I wrote about Mary Balogh’s Survivors Club series not that long ago and this month Remember Me from her Ravenswood series is on offer. It only came out in June and is book two in the series. I of course still need to read book one! As you may have noticed in the weekly posts; I still need to finish The Other Side of Mrs Wood, but its £1.99 at the moment and I think if you liked

If you want some none fiction, Adrian Tinniswood’s The Long Weekend is 99p – I read it back in the pre blog era but if you like history this is the story of the aristocracy and their house parties through the years.

This month we have an increasing number of weird looking Peter Wimsey editions so I don’t even know if I can recommend them at the moment. Oh copyright expiry, how you confuse things! But Cotillion is the 99p Georgette Heyer this month,

Recommendsday: Kindle Offers

It’s that time of the month again, but this time it’s a tricky one as we have prime day offers going on on the ‘Zon so it’s a bit of a lottery which of these are going to last all month… but I have to say it is a really good month for deals on the recent releases.

It’s Wimbledon, so it’s maybe apt that Carrie Soto is Back is 99p at the moment – it’s also out in paperback now if you want a physical copy of the former BotW. Ali Hazelwood’s Love on the Brain came out last summer and is 99p – I assume to encourage people to buy the new one. One of my favourite not-new books of the year (oops, that’s a spoiler!) Nora Goes Off Script is 99p, again because I assume the new one is out. Once More With Feeling is also 99p which is a total bargain for Elissa Sussman’s latest and one of my favourites of the year so far. Incredibly recent BotW Mrs Nash’s Ashes is also 99p as is Fake Dates and Mooncakes. And let’s not leave of Jenn McKinlay’s Summer Reading – also 99p

I have You and Me on Vacation waiting to be read – but if you’ve read some of Emily Henry’s others – like Happy Place and Book Lovers, then fill in a gap! Also waiting to be read is the new Sarah Morgan, Summer Wedding, which is 99p. I’ve read a couple of Sarah Adam’s romances and found them too New Adult for me – but I know they’re super popular so the fact that the latest Practice Makes Perfect is 99p will be good news for them. In historical detective novels, the latest in Nicola Upson’s Josephine Tey series Dear Little Corpses is £1.99.

I read it a long time ago now, but Nick Spalding’s Bricking It is £1 – as are a bunch of his other books (some are also in Kindle Unlimited). Also from quite a long time ago but on offer is Libby Page’s The Lido, while Curtis Sittenfeld’s Rodham is £1.99. And in non fiction Caitlin Doherty’s From Here to Eternity is 99p as is former BotW The Traitor King, which is really, really worth a read.

If you’re collecting series, the Bridgerton-adjacent The Further Observations of Lady Whistledown is 99p as is the non-Bridgerton Julia Quinn The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy. In other things you can find on Netflix, if you’ve watched their Wham documentary, Andrew Ridgely’s memoir Wham! George and Me is 99p.

This month’s Peter Wimsey is the brilliant Murder Must Advertise, complete with one of the best cricket matches in a book and a fascinating look at the advertising business in the 1930s. There are a couple of M C Beaton’s Agatha Raisin books on offer including one od the most recent ones – Agatha Raisin Down the Hatch and there are some Hamish MacBeth’s too – including Death of a Bore. In classic stuff, there’s a Jeeves and Wooster omnibus for 99p, as is The Color Purple, which was one of my A Level set texts back in the day. Amy Lea’s Exes and Ohs is 99p,

I bought David Sedaris’s Happy Go Lucky while writing this post, as well as Jarvis Cocker’s Good Pop, Bad Pop. And if that’s not enough books for you, I don’t know what is.

Recommendsday: June Kindle Offers

It’s the second Wednesday of the month, and that means Kindle offer time – and it’s actually quite a good crop this month, I mean I bought a few when I was writing this as well as spotting a lot of old friends!

One of my favourite reads of the year so far The Three Dahlias is 99p, I think because it’s just come out in paperback – and we’re not far away from the sequel arriving now either. Also arriving in the not too distant future is the new book from Ashley Poston – the last one Dead Romantics (a former BotW) is 99p too. I mentioned The Cazalet series only the other week when I was talking about World War Two set novels and this is your chance to read the series because the first one, The Light Years, is 99p. Fingers crossed that the others follow!

A couple of the buzzy recent (or recentish) romances are 99p as well – A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon and The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches. My mileage with magic varies, so I’ve downloaded the samples of these, with the intention of trying to read them before the month is up. I may or may not succeed with that! The new Alexandria Bellefleur is 99p too – The Fiancée Farce – which is in a new series (I think) for her.

In the Taylor Jenkins Reid universe, Malibu Rising is 99p, I assume to coincide with Carrie Soto‘s arrival in paperback. Magpie Murders is 99p again (or maybe it’s still) because the TV series is about – if you haven’t read it, it really is very good and so is the sequel, and I really hope that we get another one. I read Great Circle earlier this year – I found it a bit of a slog until (at least) the half way point, but then it picked up, but as you know I often struggle with award nominated stuff, so if you’re better at that sort of thing than me, you may love it and 99p for 600+ pages is a bargain.

I read Sue Monk Kidd’s The Secret Life of Bees well before I started this blog, but I keep meaning to reread it because it has just been adapted for the stage and had a run at Almeida theatre – which I suspect may go into the West End at some point. Dissolution, the first of the Matthew Shardlake novels is 99p – I keep meaning to read some more of these Tudor-set mysteries, I definitely have at least one on the Kindle…

In the Discworld, Guards! Guards! is £1.99 – I’ve been relistening to the City Watch series over the last few weeks because there is a new audiobook version with Jon Culshaw and it really is a treat. And obviously it has Errol in it. I’m nearly done with my relisten to all of the Peter Wimsey novels (and it’s been really good) and one of my favourites is the 99p offer this month – the seaside-set Have His Carcase, which is one of the ones with Harriet Vane. We’re still waiting for a date for series three of Bridgerton, but if you need a Julia Quinn fix, The Sum of All Kisses, from her Smythe-Smith series is 99p This one is a forced proximity, enemies to lovers romance. If you’re building your Georgette Heyer collection, Sprig Muslin is 99p and it’s one of the lesser spotted favourites – older heroine who has been left on the shelf but who has been secretly in love with someone for years. Another of my favourites, These Old Shades, is £1.52 but in the weird out of copyright editions and it’s sequel Devil’s Cub is £1.99 in a normal edition..

I bought a couple of books while writing this – the aforementioned Alexandria Bellefleur, plus Jane Ridley’s George V biography.

Recommendsday: May Kindle Offers

Slightly later than usual because I like to keep you all guessing, but here’s this month’s Kindle offers, as lovingly researched and selected by moi.

Lets start with stuff I’ve talked about recently and Hannah Dolby’s No Life for a Lady is 99p at the moment – or free if you’re in Kindle Unlimited, which is a total bargain. If the Coronation wasn’t enough Royal content for you this month, A Three Dog Problem from the HM The Queen Investigates series is 99p, Stacy Halls‘ Mrs England is on offer again. Much less recently, but still recommended is Jasper Fforde’s A Constant Rabbit – also 99p as is V for Victory by Lissa Evans

There’s also an all time children’s classic on offer because the film comes out shortly – Judy Blume’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. I’ve been listening to Dan Jones on audiobook recently, and the next one I have cued up to listen to Power and Thrones: A New History of the Middle Ages is 99p at the moment. He’s a very good narrator if you get the audio book, but if you find it easier to do monster history books in written form, this is a bargain. Rachel Lynn Solomon has a new book out soon, but one of her older ones, The Ex Talk is 99p – I prefer Weather Girl but if you’re not a journalist, you may be able to ignore the massive ethics violation in this – I know lots of other people have loved it.

If you’re collecting series, the Pratchett offers this month are The Truth (one of my favourites), Eric and The Science of Discworld III; the Julia Quinn is What Happens in London which is not a Bridgerton book but was my first ever of hers; the Wimseys are Five Red Herrings (which I listened to just last week) and the first one, Whose Body at 99p and Unnatural Death at £1.69 although that does look like a weird edition. Talisman Ring is the only Georgette Heyer on offer at 99p, but there are a few at £1.99 including Devil’s Cub.

And finally, here’s the books I bought whilst writing this post section: The Secret Barrister’s Nothing But the Truth which is 99p to mark it’s paperback release; TJ Klune’s Under the Whispering Door which I’ve been wiating to come down in price for ages and I think must be because of the release of In the Lives of Puppets; Africa Is Not A Country by Diplo Faloyin; Circling Back to You by Julie Tieu and The Neighbor Favor by Kristina Forest.

Recommendsday: April Kindle offers

It’s that time again – summon up your willpower (or not) because I’m about to round up the best kindle deals I could find on books or authors I like!

Lets start with the fact that very recent BotW and one of my favourites of the year, Funny You Should Ask is 99p. I wrote about the London Highwaymen pair of novels in the autumn and The Queer Principles of Kit Webb and The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes are both £1.99 again. Christina Lauren’s The Unhoneymooners is 99p – it’s a fake relationship enemies to lovers sort of story that I really enjoyed back in 2019 and obviously I’ve recommended several more of Christina Lauren’s books since then. Side note, they also seem to be getting reissues of their novels with new covers, so watch out for that if you’re the sort of person that remembers if you’ve read something based on the cover.

I mentioned Before the Coffee Gets Cold and its sequel in a Quick Reviews post back in 2021 – there are now four in the series about a cafe in Japan where you can travel back in time for the time it takes to drink a cup of coffee, but the first is 99p at the moment. Dear Mrs Bird is 99p at the moment – its sequel Yours Cheerfully was another 2021 BotW and the third in the series is out next month and I have a copy so will try and report back. Brit Bennet’s The Vanishing Half is 99p at the moment – it was one of my favourite books of 2020, and my mum has recently borrowed it off me and really enjoyed it as well. And In the Name of the Rose is 99p – I mentioned it in passing in my post about Mysteries with Vicars, but it’s a medieval murder mystery set among a community of monks with a famous document collection.

Just one non-fiction to mention – Paperback Crush is £1.62 – this history of teen fictions in the 80s and 90s was a BotW back in 2018, if you read through any of the era it’s worth a look. In books I have but haven’t read yet, Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers is 99p at the moment

And then in the series that people might be collecting of the Wimsey‘s Whose Body and The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club are 99p, while Unnatural Death is (the very weird price of) £1.28. The World of Blandings – which is the first two novels and some short stories – is 99p. Only one 99p Georgette Heyer this month and it’s April Lady which I really like, but there are a lot that are £1.99 – including some of my favourites like Devil’s Cub and Lady of Quality. Moving Pictures is this month’s cheap Discworld book and I’ve bought it while writing this because it’s been years since I read it and I want to see if my thoughts on it have changed (it wasn’t one of my favourites originally).

Recommendsday: March Kindle Offers

Yes, I have once again gallantly trawled this month’s offers to find stuff that I’ve talked about – or am interested in that is a bargain this month. You’re welcome.

Let’s start with news that will possibly surprise no one, the tie-in edition of Daisy Jones and the Six is 99p this month. You all know I loved the book – and the other three in the related universe so if you haven’t read it yet, then do it now! Another recently adapted book (albeit one I haven’t read yet) also has a tie in edition on offer – Fleishman is in Trouble.

In buzzy books, Ali Hazelwood’s Love on the Brain is 99p. Also in the “TikTok made me buy it” group is Sarah Adams’s When in Rome, which I am tempted by but am holding off on buying because I have on of her other books on the to-read pile so I should really read that first! Mhairi McFarlane’s Mad About You is on offer too – I loved it when I read it last year, but it comes with a warning for emotional abuse/gaslighting in the heroine’s immediate past. Second First Impressions is 99p as well if you want a romance with a bit of a different setting – I do love meddling old people.

The new Veronica Speedwell is out next week – so the previous one An Impossible Imposter is £1.99 – you do need to read them in order for best effect though. This month’s discount Terry Pratchett is Pyramids for £1.99, which isn’t one of my favourites but I know that other people do love it. The cheap Peter Wimseys are the first two – Whose Body and Clouds of Witness – the latter of which sets up Charles Parker’s interest in Lady Mary. We still don’t have a date for the next series of Bridgerton, but this month’s cheap Julia Quinns are Just Like Heaven (from the Smyth Smith series) and The Lost Duke of Wyndham. Frederica is the 99p Georgette Heyer. The latest Agatha Raisin, Devil’s Delight, is 99p – it’s three years since M C Beaton died, but there are still new books coming out, with a co-author on the cover. I haven’t read any of the “with R W Green” books yet, but I’m sure I’ll get to it at some point – the very first book in the series, Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death, is also 99p as is the first Hamish MacBeth Death of a Gossip.

Back in the mists of time I wrote about The Rosie Project – if you’re looking for something a bit different from the last decade, that would do you quite well for 99p. There was meant to be an adaptation happening, but it hasn’t materialised yet… Not quite as long ago, I recommended Dial A for Aunties, which is 99p at the moment as well presumably because Jesse Sutano’s new novel is out imminently. If you’ve read Crazy Rich Asians, the final book in that trilogy, Rich People Problems, is on offer.

If you want some non fiction, Andrew Lownie’s Traitor King is £1.99 – I read this on holiday nearly 18 months ago and have since recommended it to lots of people. On my pile waiting to be read is Katja Hoyer’s Blood and Iron about the German Empire – which is 99p. Lucy Worsley’s Queen Victoria is also on my list to read – but I should probably get to her Agatha Christie biography first… Also in history books, The Radium Girls – which is one of a series of books I read a few years ago about women doing dangerous jobs (and sometimes not knowing they were dangerous) in the first half of the 20th century. Hannah Fry’s Hello World about the age of the machines and machine learning which I read a couple of years ago but seems even more relevant than ever with the appearance of ChatGPT and the other AIs. Also on offer is Helen O’Hara’s Women vs Hollywood which I read a couple of years ago and is a total bargain at 99p at time of writing

And finally – in stuff I bought while writing this post, we have Chanel Cleeton’s latest novel Our Last Days in Barcelona which is £1.99, Fiona Davis’s latest The Magnolia Palace – also £1.99 when I wrote this and David de Jong’s Nazi Billionaires which was £2.99. Positively restrained.
