Give me your Mystery recommendations!

I am now up to date on a lot of my regular series, and others have wrapped themselves up – so I’m in the market for some more murder mystery recommendations! I’m particularly enjoying series written in or set in the early 1990s – see the Mitchell and Markby re-read, Goldy Schulz and similar – and I’d love more historicals set in times that aren’t between the wars. So please to let me know in the comments if you have anything!

  1. Angel Killer by Andrew Mayne. Jessica Blackwood Series. She was trained to be a magician until a family trick went bad now she’s an FBI agent. She is called in to a death that can’t be explained.

  2. Not sure these count as historical except turn of the recent millennium- but I’m binging Peter Grainger’s DC Smith series. The prose, the characters, and the development of relationships are very well done

  4. I know your usual kinds of books, Verity. But in the vast world of mysteries, I wonder if you have read Robert B. Parker’s “Spenser” novels. Superficially they seem to be hard-boiled US private eye thrillers. But Spenser is a deeply sensitive and complex man, and is lover, Susan, is a vital character who might provide the feminine touch you usually prefer.

  5. I’ve enjoyed the Tate and Bell series by Irina Shapiro set in Victorian London although they can be a bit gory. I love Gemma Tate’s character.

  6. Try GB Ralph, set in a small place outside Palmerston North, NZ. Also Bing Turkby, also set in PN. These aren’t historical, but are both fun in different ways.

I LOVE Gerald Hammond! If you haven’t read – Sofie Ryan, Dianne Freeman, Lauren Elliott, Kate Wells, (and a few from my ‘kooks read’ list Bailee Abbott, Cathy Ace, Catherine Aird, Bruce Alexander … (and that is just the beginning of the A’s!)

Also – when you get back into romance, may I recommend Rachael Herron. Her two autobiographical books are also very light and funny, and her newest novel (out next month) is The Seven Miracles of Beatrix Holland which is roughly a cozy fantasy and I couldn’t put down. I have fingers crossed that it will be the beginning of a series!
